Lucius Apuleius,
Opera (Works of Apuleius) 1614
$4,200
A substantial early seventeenth-century edition of the collected works of the Roman philosopher and author Lucius Apuleius (c. 124–170 AD).
Lucius Apuleius is best known for "Metamorphoses," or "The Golden Ass," the only complete Roman novel to survive from antiquity.
Printed in Hanau, Germany, in 1614, this scholarly Latin edition was edited by the noted classical scholar Johannes Priceus (Jean de Prix) and contains Apuleius's philosophical, rhetorical, and literary writings.
Bound in its early vellum binding with manuscript spine title, this impressive volume retains its original character and centuries of historical use. The text is printed in Latin and features decorative woodcut initials and period typography characteristic of the early seventeenth century.
Early ownership inscriptions provide an intriguing glimpse into the book's provenance.
An attractive and increasingly difficult-to-find early edition of one of the most influential authors of classical antiquity, preserved in a remarkably authentic contemporary presentation.
