One of the foundational works of Western philosophy, René Descartes' Les Méditations Métaphysiques ("Metaphysical Meditations") remains among the most influential philosophical texts ever written.

 

First published in Latin in 1641 as Meditationes de Prima Philosophia ("Meditations on First Philosophy"), the work presents Descartes' systematic search for certainty, introducing the famous principle commonly summarized as Cogito, ergo sum "I think, therefore I am."

 

This French edition, published in Paris by Librairie Classique Eugène Belin in 1932 and edited by Émile Thouverez, presents the classic French text together with scholarly notes, introduction, and selected objections and responses exchanged between Descartes and several of his most notable contemporaries. Through six carefully structured meditations, Descartes examines doubt, knowledge, the existence of God, the nature of reality, and the relationship between mind and body, laying the groundwork for modern rationalist philosophy.

 

Of particular interest is the publisher's anti-counterfeiting notice, accompanied by a facsimile signature (pictured). The notice reads: "Tout exemplaire de cet ouvrage non revêtu de ma griffe sera réputé contrefait," which translates as, "Any copy of this work not bearing my signature mark shall be considered counterfeit." While the signature appears to be a printed facsimile rather than a hand-signed inscription, it remains an intriguing feature of the edition and reflects publishing practices of the period.

 

This copy has been preserved in an attractive later custom half-leather binding with marbled boards and decorative marbled endpapers. Although not the original publisher's binding, the craftsmanship significantly enhances the book's visual appeal and presentation. The rich leather spine, gilt lettering, marbled papers, and ribbon marker transform an important scholarly edition into a handsome collector's volume.
